Old emails from over 5-years ago being sent out

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me with an issue that started just last week.

Apologies from the start, but I am a real technological novice so please bear with me.

I am using outlook express for my emails and over the past few days it would appear that my account by itself is sending 200+ emails on a daily basis.  There are a lot that have been returned as being undeliverable, not sure what has happened with all the rest!

If i could set out below what an undeliverable response looks like, would anyone please be able to help me?

Re: Old emails from over 5-years ago being sent out

Welcome to our Forum Lisa and sorry to hear about your email issue.

Can you give us more information on the type of emails it's sending? For example are they ones you've previously sent but are being resent again or are they new ones? Is there a pattern that you can see in relation to the recipients or are they going to everyone in your address book (or unfamiliar recipients)?

Please give us more information so we can help.

Thanks,

Lisa

Re: Old emails from over 5-years ago being sent out

Hi Lisa,

Many thanks for your response.

With regard to the emails being sent out I'm not sure to whom they have been sent too as there is no record of them in my outbox.  The only reason i know that this amount has been sent is by looking at the indicator at the bottom of the screen in outlook which informs you of the number of emails being sent.

The only reason why i know this is happening is that some emails are being returned as there is a read receipt on the message to a particular person who no longer uses this email address.  As the read receipt cannot be sent the undeliverable message has been returned to me.  With regard to the other emails being sent, to date, no one has contacted me to advise that they have received these emails.

The emails being sent are emails I sent approximately 5-years ago.

I'm not sure whether the emails are being sent to everyone in my address book as I've no way of checking as to whom the emails are being sent too.

A colleague did suggest that the emails might be being removed from my blueyonder mail account, but I don't know why this should be the case.

With regard to frequency I would say this was happening up to 5/6 times a day, every day, for about a week.  However, there hasn't been any of this  'strange' activity for the past couple of days.  Hopefully whatever it was might have resolved itself, but I would be grateful for any advice in case this should happen again.

Many thanks,

Lisa

Re: Old emails from over 5-years ago being sent out

Hmmm interesting. Is this showing up on your Outlook Express client only or does it show the same direct from your webmail? Please log into your email account via webmail and let us know whether you see the same in there.

Thanks,

Lisa

Thanks. I've taken a peek at your account details and can see that there is an outage relating to email and the fix time is 07/06. Please wait till after that date and monitor your email account to see whether there is anymore strange activity and let us know.

Thanks,

Lisa

That's good news Lisa, sounds like it might be resolved now.

Do you know why there was an outage?

Re: Old emails from over 5-years ago being sent out

I'm not sure why there was an outage but it would appear that you was not the only one with email problems so they flagged it as an outage to take a look. They can be very very technical and I'll admit I don't understand it but fingers crossed it stays resolved for you.

Regards,

Re: Old emails from over 5-years ago being sent out

@Lisa_CC

I'd like to share my thoughts on this if I may.

1.  Although the OP mentions that these are emails from over 5 -years ago being sent out, I see nothing in the headers that have been presented to suggest this.  So we're missing some critical information here.

2.  The headers as given show a send from Microsoft Outlook 16 (not Outlook Express) on 3rd June 2020 - The mail is sent via one of Virgin Media's outbound relays from a Virgin Media IP address and authenticated with the email address given in the x-authenticated-user: header.

3.  The mail is signed with a DKIM signature from VM's servers.

4. The mail is actually successfully passed on by Virgin Media's servers.  It get's rejected later on.

This looks nothing to do with an outage on the VM side IMHO.

Tim

Edit - Outlook 16 is the current incarnation of Outlook that ships with Office365
