Ntlworld SMTP Server not responding

For the last couple of days I have been unable to send emails from my email client.  It reports that the SMTP server is not responding.  Incoming emails are fine using the POP server.

I access my mail through EMClient.

Any ideas anyone?

It would be helpful to see what, if any, error code is returned by the SMTP server in this situation. Open a Command Shell window or the Terminal application and enter the following where username:password is replaced with your email address and password, i.e. richard.branson@virginmedia.com:Y54kpX5g:

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u username:password

Do not post the resulting output here but instead review it for possible reported causes and then post just the redacted part here or the VM error code.

Hi Retepdrallub, thanks for posting and welcome back to our community.

Sorry to hear that you're having issues using your email service via your email client.  Have you managed to follow the steps suggested by 用心棒?  Also, how are things going now?  Although not convenient, do you have full use of your email account via our website?

  • I tried the suggestion and it found the SMTP server okay.  Still couldn't send emails with em client or Thunderbird.  Range virgin. Spent some time on hold as I'm not sure they knew what to do. They reset the password for my main account and told me to wait half an hour.  It made no difference at all.  Still cannot send emails.  I think their solution was similar to " Turn it off, turn it back on and hope the problem has gone away"

@Retepdrallub, sign into My Virgin Media and select Account details to change your password ASAP as the unredacted curl output posted earlier  revealed your email address and password; post has been moved and once forum team have redacted it will be restored to this thread.

I can access my mail and send emails through a browser but not through email programs.  I have tried Em Client and Thunderbird.  Both download mail with no problems.  Neither can connect to the SMTP server to send emails. Em Clients has a diagnostic option.  This reports it cannot connect to the SMTP server and is unable to fix the problem.

I have lots of rules set in Em Client (which I have used for years) that filter my email into seperate folders.  I receive 60 or more emails a day and having to wade through them all in a browser takes time.  I would like to get back to using the client if at all possible.

Sorry this is still ongoing.

Can I just ask if changing your password deleting the details for the clients and re adding with new password helps.

If not, let me know as we will need to get this looked at in more detail.

I've changed my password several times but no progress.  Tried using Mailspring.  Below is the log when it tries to access my account.  The last couple of lines seem to show a problem.  Ive deleted my email address wherever it appeared
