Since VM updated the email a short time ago, I cannot access old emails from pre 2012

Was not aware of any recent updates. Do you know what these were?

I always used my emails to keep files safe,

Acceptable Use Policy | Legal | Virgin Media states it is customer's responsibility to backup their email account data, i.e. do not rely on your email account's mailbox for backups.

there-are a couple of emails I need to access because of an old complaint. Is there any way of doing this?
I am annoyed that VM did not let anyone know this would happen.
try the following to located the missing emails in webmail:
In webmail make sure all folders are subscribed to by:
- select ⚙ > Settings > ▸ Email > Change IMAP subscriptions
- select ▸ to expand folder views until all are visible
- confirm that all are folders are selected (☑)
- select Email (located top left) and then press Ctrl + Shift + R to refresh page
- check those folders selected in step 4 for the missing emails; in particular [Gmail] folder
If the emails still cannot be located then regrettably they are unrecoverable.
