Well, yes it is a legitimate (as in properly formatted) email address, but then again so is scammer@virginmedia.co.uk !

Without some more details, it really isn't possible to say what the issue is, but if in doubt then assume it is malicious and act accordingly.

OK and the vast majority of 'legit' address are *.virginmedia.co.uk rather than the .com TLD

OK, look this is getting into the weeds quite quickly, so bottom line; 

does this address look like in any way shape or form a bit suspicions?

If 'yes' then assume that it is and act accordingly.....
