Keep getting "Your e-mail server rejected your login, using outlook version 13" on windows 7
So yesterday all of the sudden, my wife keeps getting "Your e-mail server rejected your login, using outlook version 13" on her windows 7 laptop. She can send and receive using the web version at "https://mail2.virginmedia.com", so it appears that her account credentials are working ok.
We have run virus/anti malware on the pc/laptop and Mac that use the internet in the house .The results where clean. We have checked to see if our public IP address is blocked using https://mxtoolbox.com/ with the following results LISTED SORBS DUHL & LISTED Spamhaus ZEN . According to the Virgin's help page this is normal.
So I've setup logging in outlook and got the following
Re: Keep getting "Your e-mail server rejected your login, using outlook version 13" on windows
Well done on getting the Outlook log. The answer to your issue is staring you in the face if you only but knew it. There is a VM305 error at the end of the log. This means that VM is refusing to relay e-mail sent from the Hub's public IP address. It only means that and nothing else.
This is because VM have check outgoing mail against the blacklists at Spamhaus and your IP address is in the SBL CSS list which means that spam has been detected as coming from your IP address.
That means you have a spambot somewhere on your system. Spambots have a tendency to come alive and go to sleep from time to time and as a result the listing on Spamhaus drops off and is revived appropriately.
Common causes - you have jail broken Amazon Firesticks with unauthorised software on your system or you are using the free version of HOLA's VPN. The latter is a really a peer to peer networking system that is known to be compromised and is used to send spam.
As the spambots access port 25 quite independently from your e-mail program you never see or know about the spam.
