I got a email saying that virginmedia was going to close old email accounts at the end of this month, asking me for my password, was it a scam.

Most likely a scam.  Does it look similar to the one reported in example 5 of this report from the IT Security team: Latest Phishing News 19/05/2022 - Virgin Media Community - 5018096  ?
