This is beginning to sound like the SMTP servers being unable to cope with workload peaks and thus rejecting connection attempts when getting close to their throughput capacity. The long-term solution to that is to install more/higher capacity servers. I’m going to pass this to the Forum Team with a request that the server support team investigate.

It would be useful if you could keep a log of the precise dates and times when you hit the problem. You could be asked for that to speed up scanning the server logs.

The line which speedtest draws across the screen is a quick visual guide to the stability of your connection. A flat horizontal line is - good. If the line has numerous peaks and troughs that is – bad - and could suggest a cable fault or a loose connection somewhere between your PC and the nearest VM green box in the street, to name but 2 possible problems.

I've dropped you a PM Bill - this is defnitely the IMAP servers.  I'm going to try and start an IMAP logging session in Thunderbird and see if I can't capture the error in the logs.

Same Issue, keeps dropping out, tried  6 different email cliens on 4 different computers, on 3 different virgin connections...

Concusion it's a virgin issue

Since you started this thread earlier this year, we haven’t seen any evidence of this happening on any large scale. So, I think we’ll have to try chasing it from your end.

There is a guide to switching on logging for both Outlook and Thunderbird (courtesy of ravenstar68) here-

It was used to identify authentication problems but the guidance is general for logging.

If you use Outlook 2010 – this is the MS guidance for that -

If your system is tight on storage, don’t leave logging running 7x24 – and check how much space it’s using. Report back if you manage to capture an instance.
