IMAP Mail failing and no password reset possible

I can't use a virgin.net account via IMAP and now cannot reset the password with this error

 

You can't use that password. Please choose another

 

Can someone help with how to  resolve?

After reading a lot of people's other posts on this, I'd add the following:

1. I am a Virginmedia customer, but the mail address which is failing (@virgin.net) with IMAP is linked to a different VM account which was closed down years ago
2. I can't add the failing virgin.net account to the "live" Virginmedia account, and I don't want to lose the information in that virgin.net mailbox
3. Using the CURL command in other posts, I see a VM304 authentication error

How can I link the virgin.net account to the live account and restore service to the mailbox using IMAP - I don't want to be restricted to webmail only

Happy to provide the account information and eMail addresses to those who can assist
