Re: I cannot send email from my Samsung S8.

Hi Thunderbird was downloaded and email address added, default settings selected. the SMTP and IMAP settings are the same as the Samsung S8.

Mail is sent and received OK.

I deleted my email account from the Samsung S8 powered off. Reinstalled the email address and when trying to accept default settings a message "A security connection error has occurred"

I can receive but cannot send email from my Samsung S8

Any suggestions ?

Unlikely to be a certificate issue IMHO.  Bear in mind:

  1. Until you deleted the account you could receive mails but not send them.
  2. The account works fine on Thunderbird.
  3. When sending the problem occurred on both wifi and mobile data.

Due to 3 we can say that the fact that this happened not long after changing your SIM is most likely a coincidence.
Also due to 2 we can rule out a VM304 (account backend issue) or VM305 (IP issue), and a password mismatch issue too for that matter.  (Thunderbird automatically recommends the correct incoming and outgoing settings).

What email client are you using?  I know the newer phones tend to hide the old android stock client in favour of Google's Gmail client.

Re: I cannot send email from my Samsung S8.

I've just set up my email on the stock Android mail client on my Sony Xperia Z the client on that is somewhat newer - However the version doesn't make that much difference apart from the fact that it's able to automatically set up my blueyonder account (which IIRC the older clients couldn't).  IMAP and SMTP doesn't know or care what type of device you are connecting from.

Double check your settings for incoming and outgoing are definitely correct.  Especially that you are using SSL/TLS and that under  Outgoing you have Authentication switched on.

Re: I cannot send email from my Samsung S8.

I have checked and rechecked the settings. I do not get an option for ssl/TLS its one or the other or ssl (accept all certificates)  or TLS (accept all certificates)

I have now changed to SSL (accept all certificates) and also changed the setting to authentication before sending.

Bingo an email has been sent

Many thanks for your help and advice

Re: I cannot send email from my Samsung S8.

Jesus that's an old client.

For the record some of the programmers got their definitions wrong when setting out the GUI

You should be using SSL - BUT JUST THE PLAIN SSL setting.  Accept all certificates does exactly what it says on the tin.  It accepts all certificates whether they validate or not.

It's not just Android that got this wrong BTW Outlook did it to up until 2013.

Just for reference - on your version of android

SSL = SSL/TLS
TLS = StartTLS

After SSL 3.0 encryption standards were renamed to TLS 1.0 etc  (because the SSL name was owned by Netscape - and now by AOL who bought them out)

StartTLS just refers to a mechanism whereby the connection begins in an unencrypted state and then the client sends a command asking to change the connection to an encrypted one.  The advantage to this over normal SSL/TLS - is it doesn't need a special port.

Re: I cannot send email from my Samsung S8.

Thanks Tim your knowledge is superior to mine with regards to the encryption for the email. I do thank you for the explanation I do understand what you have said.

I have reverted back to just SSL but leaving "Authentication required before sending"

I have sent a test email and that has been sent.

Fingers crossed we have sorted the problem

Many thanks agin for your help much appreciated.
