Re: Failed to connect to smtp.virginmedia.com port 465:

To see what VM error code is returned by the SMTP server open a Terminal window and enter the following where username:password is replaced with your email address and password, i.e. richard.branson@virginmedia.com :Y54kpX5g:

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u username:password 2>&1 | (where findstr && (findstr  "235 VM") || (grep "235\\|VM"))

Post the redacted results here; do not post the curl command line.

Re: Failed to connect to smtp.virginmedia.com port 465:

VIP,
I am not sure what it is you need but I have already posted the response to the curl command as below.

* Trying 62.254.26.219...
* TCP_NODELAY set

* connect to 62.254.26.219 port 465 failed: Operation timed out
* Failed to connect to smtp.virginmedia.com port 465: Operation timed out
* Closing connection 0
curl: (7) Failed to connect to smtp.virginmedia.com port 465: Operation timed out

PS I am using a Macbook pro.

Re: Failed to connect to smtp.virginmedia.com port 465:

@用心棒

I think you missed this

* Trying 62.254.26.219...
* TCP_NODELAY set
* Connection failed
* connect to 62.254.26.219 port 465 failed: Operation timed out
* Failed to connect to smtp.virginmedia.com port 465: Operation timed out
* Closing connection 0

Which means the client didn't even get as far as connecting to the server - So there won't be any VM error code..

It's odd though as when I try it the server is working.

OpenSSL> s_client -connect smtp.virginmedia.com:465 -quiet
depth=2 OU = GlobalSign Root CA - R3, O = GlobalSign, CN = GlobalSign
verify return:1
depth=1 C = BE, O = GlobalSign nv-sa, CN = GlobalSign GCC R3 DV TLS CA 2020
verify return:1
depth=0 CN = email.virginmedia.com
verify return:1
220 know-smtprelay-8-imp cmsmtp ESMTP server ready

Incidentally @ricardocruz1 you may have added an extra ; between the username and the password, although that wouldn't have caused this issue..

Can you try running traceroute smtp.virginmedia.com for us and post the results.

Tim

Re: Failed to connect to smtp.virginmedia.com port 465:

Hi Tim,
You were correct that there was an extra ; in the command. When I removed it an run the command again it resulted in the following:

findstr not found

trace route produced the following:
traceroute to smtp.virginmedia.com (62.254.26.219), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
1 linksys23824 (10.43.1.1) 5.043 ms 3.947 ms 2.215 ms

Re: Failed to connect to smtp.virginmedia.com port 465:

Something strange has happened to the routing.

I'm not on the VM network anymore so if @用心棒 would like to run the same from his VM connection for comparison, I'd be grateful.

Here's what I get when I try from my PC which is Windows based

C:\Users\timdu>tracert smtp.virginmedia.com

Tracing route to smtp.virginmedia.com [62.254.26.219]

Note that the different result on the final hop is due to the way Linux runs a traceroute as compared to Windows.  In both cases I can connect successfully.

What I do note is that although you are tracing to the same IP address as myself - your trace ends nowhere near the Knowsley core network where the SMTP server is.

@ModTeam - I think someone needs to take a look at this.

@用心棒 @coenoby - Keep an eye out for any other threads with the same symptoms.

Re: Failed to connect to smtp.virginmedia.com port 465:

Can you try rerunning the curl command again now?

Looking at your traceroute somethings changed there, I wouldn't be surprised if it works now.
