Emails remain bold even after reading

Email headers used to be bold until read, then unbold.  Very easy to see at a glance what has been read.  On my phone this still works but on my computer all messages now stay bold even after reading - very confusing.  Any suggestions how to fix this please?  The little check boxes on the left of the header don't do anything.

Cannot replicate issue. Can you post a redacted screen?
