Emails not sent to virgin media servers

Hi,

Hope someone can help with this, for the last month or so my client has been having problems sending emails to virgin media email addresses. Including the following @virginmedia.com @ntlworld.com and @blueyonder.com, the server IP address isn't blacklisted and was working fine a month ago for the last 15 years.

Did virgin media change something on their servers recently? Do they have a whitelist? I tried sending an email to webmaster@virginmedia.com but it came back that it doesn't exist.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Re: Emails not sent to virgin media servers

Hello

You are going to have to get the bounce back logs from the email server, so we can analyze why this is happening.

Re: Emails not sent to virgin media servers

It'd be interesting to see the sending server IP here.  My feeling is that Virgin Media has rejected the connection attempt because the server is blacklisted.

VM use a single MX record that proxies to one of several mail exchangers on connection.

The server is definitely up and running

ravenstar68@box:~$ telnet mx.tb.ukmail.iss.as9143.net. 25

I'd suggest either

Looking at the server logs
Asking the your hosting provider to see if they have any issues connecting to the server mx.tb.ukmail.iss.as9143.net from your server IP

Tim

Edit - BTW you don't contact the webmaster to deal with email issues.  You contact the postmaster.

Re: Emails not sent to virgin media servers

Hi Tim,

Here is the IP and it isn't blacklisted.

https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist:91.238.160.7&newAppVersion=1

I will check with the hosting with the mx.tb.ukmail.iss.as9143.net

Kind regards,

Andrew

Re: Emails not sent to virgin media servers

I did some additional checks on the server IP and it's reverse DNS.  There's nothing leaping out at me as being wrong with it.  The servers banner does appear to be it's FQDN and the PTR record for the IP address does correctly point back to the servers FQDN

Re: Emails not sent to virgin media servers

Thanks, Tim,

I couldn't see anything wrong also and emails work to all other email addresses around the world. I have emailed postmaster@virginmedia.com hopefully they will be able to fix it somehow.

Re: Emails not sent to virgin media servers

Thank you for the post.

Could you please private message me with the header and contents of the email in question so we can take a look into this?

Thank you, Emily.

Re: Emails not sent to virgin media servers

@Emily_G

The problem with asking for headers in this case is that they're not  going to tell you anything.

From the error message the OP showed earlier, their server failed to connect to the mail exchanger.  This means that their was no attempt to pass the actual mail to your server or even exchange sender and recipient information.

Were this my server I'd be logging in to the server instance if it allowed me to and testing the connectivity to VM's server  with telnet.  If I couldn't reach the server, I'd then be running traceroute to see if I could determine if this was a routing issue or a server block.
