Emails not sending

My emails using MS Outlook are not sending. I keep getting a message asking me to enter my user name and password for the following server smtp.virginmedia.com. The problem started either yesterday or the day before. Any clues on how to fix  the issue? I can receive incoming emails no problem.

Re: Emails not sending

It would be helpful to see what, if any, VM error code is returned by the SMTP server in this situation. Open a Command Shell or Terminal window and enter the following command where username:password is replaced with your email address and password, i.e. richard.branson@virginmedia.com:Y54kpX5g:

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u username:password 2>&1 | (where findstr && (findstr  "235 VM") || (grep "235\|VM"))

Post the redacted results here.

Was the command you sent me to enter in the Command Shell correct?

Re: Emails not sending

Only been able to test on Windows 10 (Command Shell) and various Unix flavours. What OS and version are you running?

Re: Emails not sending

Make sure that you're using a CMD window and NOT Powershell.

While Powershell can be useful, some things that work in a CMD window DON'T work in a Powershell window and vice versa.

Re: Emails not sending

Thanks for the tip about the CMD window. And thanks to others who have responded!

I typed in the command as suggested above and the response was:

C:\Windows\System32\findstr.exe
* schannel: encrypted data got 235
< 525 5.7.13 Authentication Denied (VM305)

Any ideas what this means, or what I should do next?

VM305 Means you are blocked as your sending IP is listed on Spamhaus' CSS

Before you ask how you remove yourself from the CSS you first need to ask how your IP got on there.

Have a read of my post here:

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Security-matters/Searching-for-Spambots-on-your-network/td-p/40...

While it may look daunting, if you take it a step at a time, you should be able to follow it.  Just remember that you use Telnet to test the filter is working, once you know all is good, you close telnet before running the test proper.

Re: Emails not sending

Many thanks for your very helpful advice.

I have performed the tests that you recommended on my PC and the mobile hotspot using all the devices except fro an HP wireless printer which would not connect with the mobile hotspot for reasons I can't identify.

No packets were captured on Port 25 from either the PC or the other devices.

In the meantime, my emails are now sending. I suspect there has been a problem with the smtp.virginmedia.com server, but who knows?

Main thing is that all seems to be working OK now, so my thanks to you and the others who have responded to my request fro help.

Best wishes.
