If the "it" giving you that error message is an email app on your phone or an email client such as Windows Live Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird that you use to manage your emails then that error message may not be giving you the full story.😉
Sign in to your VM email account directly from here https://mail2.virginmedia.com/ and post back with the exact error message that gives you. Alternatively. you may find you are able to access the account from there, in which the problem would appear to be with your email app or client.
