Email hacked.

 My husbands ntlworld email was hacked a week ago. He has  received a request for money and threats to inform his contacts untrue and defamatory information about him. We have been unable to change password. We have requested that account be deleted but despite several phone calls to Virgin media over the last week with no success in resolving this. The emails keep coming. This is causing immense stress and upset. Any help would be greatly appreciated

did it say it had a webcam video and came from his email address.

if so its fake and didn;t come from his account. Its a spoofed email

You don’t know me and you’re thinking why you received this e mail, right?

Well, I actually placed a malware on the porn website and guess what, you visited this web site to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were watching the video, your web browser acted as a RDP (Remote Desktop) and a keylogger which provided me access to your display screen and webcam. Right after that, my software gathered all your contacts from your Messenger, Facebook account, and email account.

What exactly did I do?

I made a split-screen video. First part recorded the video you were viewing (you’ve got a fine taste haha), and next part recorded your webcam (Yep! It’s you doing nasty things!).

What should you do?

Well, I believe, $1400 is a fair price for our little secret. You’ll make the payment via Bitcoin to the below address (if you don’t know this, search “how to buy bitcoin” in Google).

You have 24 hours in order to make the payment. (I have an unique pixel within this email message, and right now I know that you have read this email). If I don’t get the payment, I will send your video to all of your contacts including relatives, coworkers, and so forth. Nonetheless, if I do get paid, I will erase the video immidiately. If you want evidence, reply with “Yes!” and I will send your video recording to your 5 friends. This is a non-negotiable offer, so don’t waste my time and yours by replying to this email.

Just to follow up on the post from VIP apcyberax.   Rest assured that the threats in the email are nothing for you to worry over.

Reading between the lines of what you have said it sounds like a long running and well known scam intended to scare you witless to the point where you simply pay up just to make it go away.

The sender does not have access to your device nor any knowledge of who you are or who your contacts are, nor do they have any video of you from your webcam.

Here is a link from Sophos the antivirus and IT security company which explains more about the scam and hopefully helps to put your mind at rest. 

The next thing is sorting out your password. I assume you have tried resetting your password by clicking on "password" in the "Forgotten your password" link on the sign in page here  If not, try it and enter your full ntlworld address as your username.

Do you or your husband have a broadband account with Virgin Media or are you no longer a VM customers and the Ntlworld email address just dates back to a time when you were a VM customer?

If you are still a VM customer the Forum Team (VM employees) will be able to get this sorted for you. You do not need to have the account deleted. The Forum Team will contact  you via the forum and take your details by Private Message.

If you are no longer VM customers it would be best to delete the account and the Forum Team will be able to get that done for you.
