Cannot send email : connection timed out

This issue is getting worse and worse, especially in the mornings : Error Message when I hit the Send Button: "The connection to remote server smtp.ntlworld.com timed out while awaiting the response. Please try again later."

I get the same message when I try to save to the Drafts folder, of Move and email to a specific folder.

I use the Virgin Media email portal. All settings are correct for ports.  

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Mike. It is particularly dreadful just getting 'remote server imap.ntlworld.com was refused or timed out while attempting to connect' over and over again ;-(
