If you still have a problem, it would be helpful to tell us the exact error code from your email client. (you might need to search the helpfile to find out how, or download outlook or thunderbird). Then the superusers and VM have a list of what the codes mean and can give appropriate advice.
Are you using virginmedia.com servers? Have you tried setting up the account using imap rather than pop3? Do the settings match these: pop3.virginmedia.com:995:1 SSL yes smtp.virginmedia.com:465:1 SSL yes
Start->Run->Type cmd in the command box.
At the command line, type regsvr32 Softpub.dll and press Enter
At the command line, type regsvr32 Wintrust.dll and press Enter
At the command line, type regsvr32 Initpki.dll and press Enter
