Cannot Send Mail - October 2020

The caption on my Windows 10 computer or iphone 11 says -

"the user name or password for xxxyyyzzz.ntlworld.com is incorrect"

Yet these are the same as I have been using for the past year.

Also, I regularly receive mail to my ntlworld email address.

So what has changed?

Certainly not my email address or password.

This problem seems to appear up on the forum every year.

Has a simple solution been found yet?

Re: Cannot Send Mail - October 2020

Hello

"Open a terminal and enter the following command after replacing jane.doe@virginmedia.com with your own email address:

curl -v -url "smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com" --user jane.doe@virginmedia.com

and when prompted enter your password.

If you successful authenticated yourself to the SMTP server you will see something similar to:

< 235 2.7.0 ... authentication succeeded
> HELP
< 214-2.0.0 This is cmsmtp ESMTP service help
214-2.0.0 This is cmsmtp ESMTP service help
< 214-2.0.0 To contact postmaster send email to postmaster@virginmedia.com.
214-2.0.0 To contact postmaster send email to postmaster@virginmedia.com.
< 214-2.0.0 For local information send email to Postmaster at your site.
214-2.0.0 For local information send email to Postmaster at your site.
< 214 2.0.0 end of HELP info
214 2.0.0 end of HELP info
* Connection #0 to host smtp.virginmedia.com left intact

however if not you will see:

< 535 5.7.8 Authentication Credentials Invalid (VM300)
* Closing connection 0
curl: (67) Login denied
What VM code do you see; in the example above it is VM300? Please do not be tempted to post more than the requested curl output as you will likely reveal your email address and password."

Regards Mike

Re: Cannot Send Mail - October 2020

@DJ_Shadow1966

The -url is implied if you just put the address in.  --user can be replaced with -u

In addition we can pipe the output after redirecting it all to stdout with 2>&1 to findstr on Windows or grep on linux/unix/MacOS in order to output the authentication results only.  Give it a try

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u myaddress:mypassword 2>&1 | findstr "235 VM"
curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u myaddress:mypassword 2>&1 | grep "235\|VM"

Here's what we see using each first with a failure:

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u myaddress:mypassword 2>&1 | findstr "235 VM"
< 535 5.7.8 Authentication Credentials Invalid (VM300)

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u myaddress:mypassword 2>&1 | grep "235\|VM"
< 535 5.7.8 Authentication Credentials Invalid (VM300)

And now with a genuine username and password (which have been redacted)

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u me@blueyonder.co.uk:password 2>&1 | findstr "235 VM"
< 235 2.7.0 ... authentication succeeded

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u me@blueyonder.co.uk:password 2>&1 | grep "235\|VM"
< 235 2.7.0 ... authentication succeeded

@BlueView

If you open a command line in Windows by typing cmd into the search bar.  Then type or copy the following:

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u myaddress:mypassword 2>&1 | findstr "235 VM"

Paste the response into here.

Re: Cannot Send Mail - October 2020

I copied and posted exactly that and the response was reverting to the C prompt.

Did you mean me to enter my email address and my password?

BTW, I entered the curl etc you suggested earlier and added my email address instead of Jane Doe etc.

Everything was going well particularly when it asked for my password.

I found it impossible to write anything. The cursor just kept blinking. My keyboard registered nothing

I did all of the above.

When prompted, I couldn't enter a password as the cursor just kept blinking.

Nothing I typed on my keyboard registered.

Re: Cannot Send Mail - October 2020

Follow the instructions in message 4 in this thread.

You only have to make one command line entry.

You can always prepare the line in a text editor or word processor then copy and paste it.

You use your e-mail address and your password.

We are looking for a response from your account with VM, not the account of the fictional jane.doe!

Report the result, just the VM3xx code. Nothing else.

It does register, it just doesn't show on screen.  When you press Enter it will work.

However that's another reason I prefer my version --user myaddress:mypassword

Re: Cannot Send Mail - October 2020

The reply was:

"235VM" was not recognised as an internal or external command, operable programme, or batch file.

Re: Cannot Send Mail - October 2020

That indicates a mistake when typing it in.
