Is there a way of setting up an auto-reply for messages sent to a Blueyonder email account? (e.g. like an out-of-office reply).

Yes, in Virgin Media Mail it is called a Holiday notice and can be set by clicking on the settings icon in the webmail page.  Select settings> email > holiday notice
