Which email client are you using?
Ensure the account is set to these details:
imap.virginmedia.com
Port 993
SSL yes
smtp.virginmedia.com
Port 465
SSL yes

If you’re using Windows Mail app then the incoming & outgoing servers are slightly different:
imap.virginmedia.com:993.1
smtp.virginmedia.com:465.1

Are you still a Virgin Media Broadband account customer?

The reason I ask is the symptoms you describe usually arise when VM are deleting an email account that is no longer linked to a live VM broadband account. Access to the webmail account seems to be the first thing to go but for a while you can still access your emails via an email app. However, even that goes eventually.

VM's terms and conditions say that VM will delete any associated email accounts 90 days after the broadband account has been closed. In the past they often left such accounts open sometimes for years. However, at the moment they do seem to be having a purge on clearing out these old  "orphan" email accounts, probably linked to the fact that last year they stopped issuing new VM email accounts. These days new broadband customers have to use third party (non VM) email accounts.

Post back if you are still a broadband customer because VM staff on the Forum can check this out for you.

Hey PeterJC,

Welcome to the community and thanks for taking the time to post here on the forums.
I’m sorry to hear of the issues that you’re having with your email account at the moment. As @coenoby asked, are you currently a Virgin Media customer? If not, your email address may have been closed down, if its over 90 days since your Media account was closed.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the replies. When i moved house 6 months ago VM were unable to supply my new address. I was told at time that I could keep my e mail address. 6 months to the day I am now unable to access via VM. I have now been able to access via Outlook. The email still works on my phone as i am a Virgin Mobile customer. I am not tech savvy but have I solved the issue by logging in through Outlook?

Alas no, almost certainly your email address, mailbox and all of the mail within it has  been marked for deletion, which should be done after 90 days of you leaving VM but can sometimes take longer. As mentioned above one of the 'odd' symptoms of this process being started, is that access via the web interface goes first. You may well be able to carry on using it via Outlook, but this will only be a short term fix, days, possibly, before the whole lot is deleted.

Being a Virgin Mobile customer isn't enough, you have to be a current broadband customer to use any of the VM branded email addresses.

What I would strongly suggest is that you use this time to set yourself up with a new third party email address from Goggle or Microsoft etc, and while you still do have access to your ntlworld address, you start informing all of your contacts of the new address and saving any emails that you want to keep.

If in a week or so, you find that the ntlworld address still works, please don't be tempted to think that 'they've forgotten about me and I'll carry on as usual', because they haven't and the whole lot will vanish one day with no further warning.

Thanks for the reply and advice. Its extremely annoying, particularly as i was told 6 months ago that i could keep my e mail address. Plus the fact I  have been given no notice. Not a good way to treat a customer of many years.😡

You certainly aren't the first and I suspect that you won't be the last to report on here of being told 'that you will be able to keep the address indefinitely', I can only put it down to a lack of training for the call centre agents and a 'sort of' call centre / corporate culture of 'if in doubt, just make something up; anything will do, if it gets the person off the line, we chalk up another successfully closed call and can move on the next mug valued customer'! You might want to bear that in mind should you be in a position to rejoin VM in the future or if asked your opinion of them.
