550:550 The sending IP (80.0.253.70) is listed on https://spamrl.com/. Help/advice please

I'm having maeler-demon@virginmedia.com message delivery failures with the following information:

"Message to the following recipients ... failed permanently.

The remote server returned the below error when attempting delivery:

550:550 The sending IP (80.0.253.70) is listed on https://spamrl.com/. Please resolve this and retry."

I think this IP address is for one of the Virgin Media servers.  Can anyone advise how to solve this please?

On a possibly related issue - I've also been getting a lot more spam and phishing email recently often from supposed anti-virus software suppliers saying my anti-virus is running out (it isn't).  I'm blocking them as I receive them but still they come in with multiple different addresses but purporting to come from the same people.

Issue of outgoing server being blacklisted has been flagged to the forum team; in the mean time use webmail to send emails.

Increase in amount of spam is not related but due to combination of ineffective spam filtering, time of years, and pandemic. See if the filter rule detailed here Re: I want spam is of any help.

Hello BaH,

Sorry to hear about the email issue you're having. Can I ask whether you see the message delivery error on all emails or to just certain recipients? Also does it happen when you're sending via webmail and third party email apps or just one of them?

I ask because we may need IT to take a look but they'll want more information.

Thanks,

Lisa

@Lisa_CC

All you need to know is that that IP address is blacklisted in order to report it.

80.0.253.70 is part of the sending servers email servers at Knowsley (80.0.253.64 - 80.0.253.79)

Any blacklisting of this IP range is undesirable as it will impact all users sending to domains that utilise those lists.  If those servers are listed, the security team need to look into this.

Currently that host is listed on 6 blacklists:

Thanks Tim. Let me fling this over to them to see if it's okay and I'll update this thread once IT gets back to me.

Thanks,

Lisa

Hi BaH,

I've received a reply from our Support Team and have been advised that they've checked our email servers against various Blocklists and they appear to be generally regarded as clean. They've also noted that SPAMRL advises that the email wasn't rejected completely but may have been delivered and then filtered into the recipient's spam folder.

Can you please check your mailbox and ask the recipients to check theirs to see what rules and filters they have?

Thanks,

Lisa

@Lisa_CC

SpamRL are just a blacklist provider.  They can't always determine what a recipients email provider does when an IP is blacklisted.

The Bounce message received by the OP is unambiguous though:

"Message to the following recipients ... failed permanently.

The remote server returned the below error when attempting delivery:

550:550 The sending IP (80.0.253.70) is listed on https://spamrl.com/. Please resolve this and retry."

The IP address appears on several blacklists including project honeypot.

Tim, thanks so much for your support with this.  I went round and round for several hours with Virgin on the phone about this before posting here.  So grateful that you have understood the problem and have the experience to know how to keep Virgin on track with the issue. Good wishes and thanks,

Hi BaH,

I've received confirmation that that IP provided has been de-listed from all our clean mail servers however they may be listedn again if spam is sent through our clean relays. Are you able to try again?

Thanks,

Lisa
