It is your responsibility to let your current provider know that you are leaving by giving them the appropraite notice to close your account.
If you are transferring your landline telephone number from one provider to another then when the phoneline completes the port it should automatically cancel the landline with your current provider, but you need an active account with the current provider without a cancellation notice on the line for the number transfer to complete. The number porting doesn't cancel any other part of the contract.
