I have started to have a black screen appear for a second regardless of which channel I am watching. Happening quite regularly. Any ideas?

I presume this is happening with a VM TV box? If so, which one - TiVo, V6 or TV360? https://www.virginmedia.com/care/tv-fault/which-tv-box 

Does the same thing happen with OnDemand services or recordings?

Try a new HDMI and other cables, make sure they're tightly fitted, as they get old or come loose after a while
