47 spam calls from Virgin media in the past 5 days - what an abuse

We have has 47 spam telephone calls from Virgin media 08001836403 in the past week.

What an absolute abuse - harassment from this "respectable" company. I am really really hopping mad - what a bunch of creeps and why do they think this is going to make me feel like being a continuing customer. Really Virgin, Really. Harassment and abuse is not going down well.

If you outsource your harassment to third parties you need to make damn sure what they get up to in your name.

Re: 47 spam calls from Virgin media in the past 5 days - what an abuse

a quick google suggest that the call is not originating from virgin, but from a company masquerading as them.

it's very easy to spoof a number making it look legit.

Re: 47 spam calls from Virgin media in the past 5 days - what an abuse

Not true I'm afraid -- they know all about my Virgin account -- from Virgin (no details are from me). They are outsourced by Virgin and facilitated by Virgin Media. They know all about recent changes to my account etc.

This is a better thread discussing what they are: https://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/08001836403

And as you will see in various parts of this thread https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Virgin-Mobile/0800-183-6403/td-p/3335567/page/2

Virgin Media have already acknowledged (and do so on this forum) that it is a part of their sales team.

Re: 47 spam calls from Virgin media in the past 5 days - what an abuse

do they know, or did they just guess?
people are reporting receiving calls from that number telling them they can "optimise their broadband" - that's clearly a scam call and not from virgin.

what details did they give you that only virgin would know?

Re: 47 spam calls from Virgin media in the past 5 days - what an abuse

Recent changes to my plan for example. But it might help if you read the forum - Virgin moderators have (on this forum and in response to customers) clearly stated that it is part of their sales team. And the conversations have no content other than attempted Virgin sales. So unless there is some philanthropic spammer out there trying to drum up sales for Virgin Media - it is hardly plausible that Virgin Media is not driving it.

Re: 47 spam calls from Virgin media in the past 5 days - what an abuse

i didn't say the number wasn't a virgin number, i suggested that someone could (and evidence shows it has happened) spoof that number (prime example of being someone calling to "optimise their broadband".

with a bit of fairly simple jiggery-pokery i could make a call that looks like it came from your landline or mobile number.

did you answer all 47 calls to confirm they actually were virgin?

It's a Virgin Media sales number, has been for a few years.

Re: 47 spam calls from Virgin media in the past 5 days - what an abuse

No I answered 8. Hard to imagine the other 39 were any different. It is also in my opinion a bit of a stretch to think that scamsters would spend effort and money using a known Virgin Number to sell Virgin stuff (albeit incompetently and with poor English). My guess is that some smart alec at Virgin signed a contract with these folk and gives away the rudimentary contact details -- and if you look at other complaint threads like

here  https://whocalledmeinfo.com/08004089340

you will see that not a single complaint is that they are called by "Virgin" and are not in fact a Virgin customer (or recent customer). If Virgin disowns these supposedly independent scamsters (who are not in fact separate scamsters) it is almost worse - because it means that Virgin has given away our data.

Re: 47 spam calls from Virgin media in the past 5 days - what an abuse

Problem is that in the various complaints threads like

https://whocalledmeinfo.com/08004089340

no one is complaining that they are called by Virgin to upgrade their account and that they are not in fact a Virgin customer (or a just departed one). So if Virgin wants to distance themselves from these people they need to explain how it happens that they have our data.
