Unlimited data? Yeah right

[ Edited ]

This has to be the biggest con going. Virgin are selling SIMs with unlimited data then sticking this in the small print:

"Unlimited mobile internet is subject to a fair use allowance of 1GB per month. If your usage exceeds this amount then we reserve the right to charge you for the excessive element of your usage at the daily rate for your tariff outlined in our Tariff Table. Unlimited use is within the UK and is for your personal, non-commercial use only. It doesn't include making internet phone or video calls, peer to peer file sharing, using your phone as a modem, or while you are abroad and any of these uses will be charged at the daily rate for your tariff outlined in our Tariff Table"

So it is a 1GB limit. This really should be banned. Suppliers should not be allowed to say unlimited when it isn't. This really winds me up.

Now let's see what Three's terms and conditions are for their unlimited data package:

"Some networks have been massively reducing the amount of data their customers are allowed to use on their tariffs recently, to as little as 500MB or even 250MB. Three have taken a step in the opposite direction: All-You-Can-Eat means All-You-Can-Eat. You wont be charged for your data, no matter how much internet you use on your phone. No unexpected charges, no hassle, and No Data Limits! However, you cannot use your phone SIM in another device. If you do, you will be charged for the data used as per out of bundle charges."

T-Mobile's small print:

Now they are unlimited data packages. Disappointed Virgin. Stop misleading customers with incorrect advertising. If you can't/won't offer "unlimited" data don't use the word. It's really quite simple.

No reply from anyone at Virgin concerning this blatant misrepresentation? Or lie, might be a better phrase.  Unlimited means without a limit.  It's simple English.

Re: Unlimited data? Yeah right

So if I look at the tariffs available. The Starter SIM gives 250 minutes, unlimited texts (sorry, I mean 3000) and 1GB of data for £10 a month.

The Mobile SIM only at £12 a month gives me 150 minutes, unlimited texts (3000) and unlimited data (1GB). So I am actually better off spending £2 less a month and getting 100 more minutes!

Re: Unlimited data? Yeah right

Where did you find this info?

The unlimited tariffs available now have been actually unlimited for quite some time. Only the older "unlimited" tariffs from Beginning of this year or earlier have the 1gb limit.

It is listed here under the "Our Fair Use Policies" section:

I see this says it is for customers who connected before 25th June. What about those after 25th June, I guess it must be truly unlimited then?

Re: Unlimited data? Yeah right

Correct :-)

So in reality Virgin is now one of the best networks for data allowance, as it also includes tethering.

Re: Unlimited data? Yeah right

I stand corrected then. Good to see it has been changed.

It has always annoyed me when companies use things like "unlimited" or "free" then stick in a clause embedded amongst a mass of other small print to say that it isn't actually the case.

The only reason I brought this up was because I was looking at one of these new Chromebooks and wondered if the £12 a month unlimited data SIM only would work in it? Seems excellent value if it does, especially as it is actually unlimited.

Re: Unlimited data? Yeah right

yes the unlimited means unlimited on new sim only deals - i pay for the premier 20 so get quite a lot of free stuff on it and i use it for tethering my android tablet every now and then - can't do that on t-mobile or three (unless you have a package that allows it)
