Firmware upgrades for WGR614v9 router ?

Hi

I just had VM cable installed last week. It included a wireless broadband router. This seems to keep freezing, and I have to unplug/reboot it to get connection again. I had a Netgear ADSL modem before, so know how to get into the admin panels. The firmware seems very elderly (1.0.11_1.0.1VGUK is reported) - but I believe I can't update it with standard Netgear firmware (currently at 1.26) as VM have customised this.

Is there a supported / recommended upgrade ? Are there other things which might improve stability ?

Firmware updates are locked out from user updates for modems provided by your ISP, and quite possibly a fair few of the more advanced options.

If you want your own control over this aspect rather than trusting what the ISP is doing (and potentially being able to see behind the routers firewall at all users computers within the household) the only option is buy your own compatible router.

The rub is, (and possibly because of the above - call me a cynical veteran of the UK anti-phorm campaign who no longer trusts ISPs as far as I can throw them), Virgin do not offer support for any problems related to your router thereafter.

I have just had VM installed with this router and have had nothing but problems with it.

I couldn't download apps as I kept getting a 'cannot verify your digital signature' error message.  Even when I took all security off still got the error.

The router kills Rapidshare downloads.

I changed the WAN setting in the router to turn off the firewall.  Didn't work.

As soon as I took the router offline all these problems went away.

I'm going to try later to reset factory defaults on the router. There is no buttion on it so i'll have to look at the settings.   

If this doesn't work can anyone recommend a good wireless G or reasonably priced N router that works for them.

Lastly do I actually own this router? If so i'll move it on.

As feared - No joy.

Tried resetting the firmware - a no go.

Uninstalled the Wireless Manager (what is that for?) - no effect

Tried a friends Belkin Wireless N+ Router today works like a dream. 

Just ordered one for myself.

I have managed to upgrade this router with the Netgear firmware, it's not simple but worth the hassle. Search for "telnetenable.exe" online to find instructions on how to do this.
