50 Mbps - total joke - more hopeless than ever

Am at the end of my tether.  Last night I tried watching a film on my Apple TV.  A two hour film took 5 hours to watch with interruptions very 2-3 minutes.  Speedtest showed a speed of around 5Mbps, which should easily have been sufficient.

Today pingtest rates me as F.  I have not been able to watch more than 1 minute of a 5 minute you tube video.

VM swapped out my "super"hub two weeks ago, but there's been no improvement and I am now told that in my area (SW2) there will be problems until the middle of August.  That's a FULL SIX MONTHS of unacceptably bad performance.

Is there anything to be deduced from my latest connection stats?

Speedtest today oscillates between about 5Mbps and 0.1 Mbps.

I so miss the days of Be internet.  Stable, fast, efficient.  Sadly I've moved and am no longer in a Be area.

Grateful for any help from the support guys here who I recognise do their best.  Do I need another new superhub?

Hey swt4ajp,

Thanks for the advice.  Sadly I'd already tried that - made no difference at all.

Re: 50 Mbps - total joke - more hopeless than ever

http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/

click the above link and download 3 files

make sure they are about 1.5gb each so you got anough time for testing

and after about 2 mins it should stable at a steady speed and calculate the speed together and that should give you what you are getting at the moment

thanks

Re: 50 Mbps - total joke - more hopeless than ever

Hi LondonMark,

I've had a look into your issue and I'm not able to see anything which could be causing your issue. The only thing that stands out, is a very brief period of high downstream utilsiation at the height of peak period.

Could you confirm if your issue is intermittent according to the time of day?

Could you also please advise if the same thing occurs on a direct connection?
Regards,

Peter Rafferty

Re: 50 Mbps - total joke - more hopeless than ever

Pete_R

Thanks for your reply.  Can you tell me what you mean by "a very brief period"?  Pretty much every evening from around 7pm to 11pm, it's impossible to watch a 2 minute Youtube clip.  4 hours is a long time.

The issue is intermittent, and definitely worse in the evenings, but it can happen almost at any time.

Wired or wireless makes no difference at all.

Thanks

Mark

Re: 50 Mbps - total joke - more hopeless than ever

Hi Londonmark,

I have checked the connection and the brief period that Pete has mentioned is when the utilisation is peaking above 80%. This happens for a period of about 5-10 minutes during the evenings for the past few days which is the reason we do not believe that utilisation is causing this issue.

I have also checked noise and errors on the network segment and they are all showing no issues.
Kind Regards,

Re: 50 Mbps - total joke - more hopeless than ever

Neil,

Thanks for your response. I thought I'd wait a few days to see how things panned out. The answer is not well. Pingtest is giving me a rating of F - 8% packet loss, ping of 149ms and and jitter of 141. I cannot download app upgrades from the iTunes store - they get about half way through and then stop. Pausing and restarting kicks them off briefly. Radio streams from the BBC stutter horribly. I haven't even bothered to try a Youtube video.

Why am I paying so much money for 50Mbps?

Here's a traceroute result:

I've not posted power levels again as Pete's previous post suggested they were ok. There seems to be something seriously wrong in my area (SW2).

To be clear, I don't see this as a problem that happens for 5-10 minutes during the evenings. It happens for several hours every evening.

Re: 50 Mbps - total joke - more hopeless than ever

Hi Londonmark,

I have checked your connection and can confirm that you are affected by a local downstream utilisation issue on your chassis (local router) which will cause your speed to slow during the periods you mention. The fix date for this issue is currently set to the week ending 12/08/2011. The reference for this issue is F001598889. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may be causing you.

Re: 50 Mbps - total joke - more hopeless than ever

John,

While I appreciate your efforts, I'm getting a bit fed up with constant apologies but no solution.  By August it will be 6 months of hopeless service.  If I phone customer services and complain a lot I get some money back, but it's a slow and painful process.  And all I really want is a decent service.

Can you confirm that when the fault is resolved, I will actually receive something close to what is promised by 50 Mbps broadband?  Pingtest this evening (just before midnight, so surely not a peak time) shows a rating of D, and needless to say I cannot even watch a movie preview on my Apple TV.  Over the weekend, I tried to watch a movie on the same device - absolutely impossible.  After 36 hours it had managed to download 9 minutes of the film.  On my previous ADSL connection, I could watch a film within 1 minute of selecting it.

Are there any steps that I can take to improve things before August?  I've done all the usual things (IP Flood Detection off, changed the wireless channel etc.)  Should I change my DNS settings?

LM
