Hello, all emails coming from gmail addresses are automatically going into my VM spam folder.
Marking them as 'not spam' (and refreshing the page) makes no difference for new gmail messages. Only gmail messages are going into the spam folder, all others are going into the inbox just fine.
My public email address is (I think it's called) an alias using redirection to my VM address from a seperate domain server but this arrangement has been working for years with VM (and before that with other providers since 1990!)
Does anyone have an answer please?
Thanks

Sorry, I did not spot that email header you posted.
Putting that header through this email header analyser https://mxtoolbox.com/EmailHeaders.aspx (it's a universal checker so it's independent of VM) comes up with the following errors:
And specifically:
Dkim Signature Error:
DKIM-Signature d:Required tag not found s:Required tag not found h:Required tag not found bh:Required tag not found b:Required tag not found - more info
Dkim Signature Error:
There must be at least one aligned DKIM-Signature for the message to be considered aligned. - more info
Edited to add:
spf=softfail (185.151.28.75;gmail.com); dkim=pass header.d=gmail.com; dmarc=pass header.from=gmail.com (p=none sp=quarantine dis=pass)
The spf "softfail" indicates that the email should be flagged as spam
VM do seem very hot on their SPF, DMARC and DKIM checks on incoming emails so it's not surprising VM view that email as being suspicious. It's understandable VM play safe because they want to protect their email customers from getting spoofed emails from scammers.
Perhaps you could raise those errors with your domain provider or the email forwarder if you are using a separate organisation to do that.
However, using email forwarding to manage email on a private domain is always prone to problems like this and not just those with VM email accounts.
People using email forwarding regularly report that their private domain emails suddenly stop arriving because of a change somewhere in the email authentication process. It's been regularly reported here and on the forums of other email providers for many years.
I have just had a look at the UK2 website (it seems that is who you are with) and they offer email packages from 50p a month. You need to think about looking into moving over to using one of the offerings. Ideally you want one that offers a webmail service and also supports IMAP/SMTP as well. That will allow you to use an email app or client to manage your private domain emails. There is always the option to run your own email server but using an email package from your domain supplier is a good option for a non techie.😉
Also, bear in mind that the whole future of the VM email is uncertain. VM stopped issuing new email accounts more than 2 1/2 years ago and they have just started a big push to closing VM email accounts that are not linked to a VM broadband package. Clearly they do not see their email service as being a long term part of the business plan moving forward so moving to more professional setup with your private domain would seem to make perfect sense.
Sorry to go on but I hope that's all useful food for thought.

Hi @sjcgb
Welcome back to the community forums
Sorry to hear that emails coming from Gmail are moving into your spam folder.
Have you made any changes to your settings recently, can you try defaulting the settings to see if this resolves the issue?
on 21-10-2024 17:22
Hi Carley, thank you for your comment.
Last week all of my emails going to gmail accounts were returned undelivered stating there was an authentication problem. I had the same issue in 2023 and my domain provider (who forwards emails to my public domain address to my VM address for collection by my email client -phone, PC etc.) added things I don't understand, like SPF and other acronyms as well as the VM server address, which solved that issue. However, the same thing happened again last week and I got the domain provider to check again. They (quote) "added VM IPS to the DNS records which should solve the problem" and it did allow me to send to gmail addresses OK.
However, I then noticed that I was not receiving any gmail emails - going to online mail I saw that all @gmail emails were going to my VM spam folder. Marking the individual email senders 'not spam' didn't make any difference, new emails from the same email addresses still went to spam.
On sending the header (taken from the email VM marked as spam) to my domain provider (see header above, pasted in my earlier post) I got the following response: "From our side the forwarder seems to be set up correctly and the SPF record is set correctly. If issues persist we recommend reaching out to virgin's support to see if they are able to identify why the emails may be marked as spam (by them)."
I'm not a tech person at all but can see from the header that the original email I sent is not marked as spam by gmail but the reply to me is marked as spam by VM.
Please would you sort out how to not automatically mark gmail messages as spam. I still need normal spam to be marked as spam!
Thank you!
Best wishes
Steve

Hi @sjcgb,
Thank you for expanding. It's strange that it's only from a particular domain that you're experiencing the issue.
Would you be able to manually check your spam filters to see if there's anything there that would explain this, and make any necessary adjustments if you see something? You can find more information on spam emails, spam filters, etc. here.
Let us know how you get on.
Thanks,

Thank you Zach_R.
What I think is happening here is that we're not dealing with SPAM as such but what you describe on the spam information page as:
"The spam filter also checks to make sure any emails you receive have been sent legitimately by sender shown in the email. If we believe an email isn’t actually from who it claims to be from, we’ll place the message into the Spam Folder." and oddly webmail is picking out gmail under that test. That may be (I don't know!) because the gmail is being forwarded to the VM server from my domain provider (UK2.net). This is a process (Domain forwarding) which has been working for me for more than 25 years and as far as I can see it's the authentication protocols that have changed and need resetting.
I understand (from speaking to someone who seemed to know!) that it is all to do with something called DKIM.... My domain provider UK2.net are convinced that they have all the right settings to authenticate gmail but maybe VM hasn't and is therefore putting it in spam.
I'd be interested to have your thoughts on that because at the moment I've turned off all spam in my VM account (to get the gmail through) but am consequently getting spam in my inbox! Which I'd like to stop.
Hope you can help.

Hi @sjcgb / Steve.
Thanks for coming back to us.
Is it all Gmail emails or only ones not being forwarded by other domains?
Best wishes.

Hi John, it's all gmails, wherever they come from.
Thanks
