I have sky sports hd on my tv package, been working fine for the last 5 months I’ve had it, but suddenly the HD channels are just the regular poor quality ones. The audio also seems to have a delay
The channels haven't changed and are still in HD where you select the HD channel number, but Sky have removed the 'HD' badge from their on screen channel logos.
HD shows are still marked as such in the EPG.
Why has their been a massive drop in quality on just those channels for me then? Even my partner who never notices this sort of stuff came in the room and said the picture looked crap and fuzzy
Those channels are fine for me, and there haven't been any other threads reporting this nationally, so it sounds like a problem local to you.
Check your service status, and if nothing is showing, report the fault to Virgin so they can fix it.

Very sorry to hear you are having trouble with the quality of these channels. Are you having any issues on any other HD channels?
Please can you check that all cables are connected to your box securely and the HDMI cable is securely connected to the TV please?
Is you box in a well ventilated area? (not in a cabinet or anything like that)
