How would you know beforehand which content broadcasts in 5.1 ?

The majority of channels do not broadcast 5.1. I only know when I check my AV receiver.

So my Amazon fire Stick outputs 5.1 so why can't Virgin do it ?

They can and do. But if the content you're watching doesn't have 5.1, they can't output something that doesn't exist.

Sky Cinema has 5.1 as does the BBC some content. But other channels like ITV only output 2.0.

Thanks for replies, I use HDMI to TV then optical audio from TV to surround sound receiver, does it make any diffference if I use optical out from the V6 box direct to my reciever which has two optical audio inputs so I have options but seeing answers here I dont think it matters which option I choose ?

I have now connected the optical out from the V6 box direct to my surround sound receiver and it plays in surround sound and on many of the channels ( not just the movie channels ) I think why the HDMI is not playing surround audio is because its going through a splitter first and it may be a faulty splitter.

Some tvs will NOT pas-thru a 5.1 source and convert it to 2.0

You should be connecting the receiver with an HDMI cable to the V6 and the receiver to the TV with another HDMI cable. If your receiver lacks the HDMI ports you need to upgrade.
