The Bonjour service (mdnsresponder.exe on Windows) is integrated with some Apple software  and hardware.

It's handy if you want to make it easy to connect to services and attached devices that are linked to Apple products.  The Bonjour service isn't essential, however. It generally works with Apple products and services, and is usually on devices that have iTunes or iPhones, iPads, or printers for example. If you don't have bonjour enabled then it can prevent devices and programs from running.

VM equipment including Tivo's, V6 and 360 boxes need the ports open to update the EPG, download updates, allow customers to watch catch up or on demand services, and to operate via the internet

First thing - is it definitely a TiVo you have, and not a V6? I ask because the connectivity fundamentally differs between them - if you're not sure, check here

Assuming it is... the TiVo doesn't use your home broadband and has its separate/independent net connection inbuilt. It's only the V6 (and 360) that use your home broadband and therefore have a 192.168.x.y address.

I have a vague recollection of "bonjour" being related to VoD or EPG entries, but don't quote me on that.

thanks for the replies.

Sorry it is a v6 box linked to router via Ethernet cable, but I did link it to WiFi as for some reason out of the blue the Ethernet decided not to work for a while.

With regards to ports, I’m only trace route the v6 IP address.

I searched this forum last night and the answers generally were that open ports are not good.

it has a 192.168 address.

dns of 194.168.8.xxx what is a dns? Thanks

dns is the system that translates names (human friendly) into numbers (computer friendly). so when you go to www.google.com your computer needs to translate that name into an ip address - which it uses dns to do. your pc sends a query to the configured dns server (194.168. in your example) saying "what's teh IP address for www.google.com - the server responds with an ip address and your computer then makes a connection to that ip address.

Your V6 box needs an internet connection for certain functions as mentioned by newapollo.

All devices connected to your home router will be allocated an IP address in the range 192.168 - your V6 is no exception.

Thanks.

I searched this forum high abs low last night and it seemed to me that ports such as the ones shown in the photo on original post are not good.

also the option to log into my v6 box when I type the IP address into the web browser. Virgin technical help line went rather quiet when I asked

My hub this eve has spat its dummy out now.

Rather than spiral into finding issues where there potentially aren't, what are the problems you're having with your VM services?

What is it that's caused you to go looking in this direction, the answer could well be somewhere else.

My issues include: September 2020, bank account cleared out, identify theft, lap top fully corrupted and needed full wipe and reset. New lap top purchased at that time, same model & spec just new. iPhone acted strange. When factory reset was performed the ‘start up procedure’ was different to another iPhone which I was performing the same sequence on. Signs of jailbreak according to internet but as Always not apples fault. So I got a brand new phone.

My gut instinct was that things were not back to 100% normal however I thought I was me being over worried due to my experience.

December 2020, refurbished and new lap tops I would say ‘hi-jacked’ on the same day. Data grab from my clouds. Both lap tops corrupted, blue screen. Both reset and wiped. Clouds quarantined and filtered. iPhone went strange too. Would make clicking noises as if things were connecting or being selected when doing simple things.

please note I had good antivirus and firewalls on both lap tops.

After this I got new router, new phone and contract. New back account, new email, new business cloud, monitored antivirus with employed it specialist.

Still being paranoid, I did not connect one of the lap tops to my virgin router for months. This is the one I use for business - dedicated to one individual client, I used a 3G dongel when at home. connected to other wifi networks whether that be at clients premises or on project.

My laptop I use for personal business, and other smaller clients I connected to virgin. Things didn’t seem right. Only when connected to my home virgin WiFi. Again I put it down to being over worried.

My job civil engineer / Contracts manager means day to day 50% of my time is spent on laptop, with further time in the evening. I’ve used a computer every say it seems for 15 years, I knew my gut instinct that things are not as they seem when connected to my virgin hub.

I tested positive for covid so was at home for 2.5 weeks. In this time I connected my ‘dongel laptop’ to the virgin network to complete tasks from home. Which I wish I never did. It is a top spec laptop. i7 processor, 17inch screen, loads of ram and memory. It is suited for gaming, however it suits me as I need to view 3D cad models from portals / clouds not stored on my hard drive. Never had any issues years.
Within a few days I notice simple tasks are clunky, no chance of opening a cad model.
again my logic dictates though process of elimination and common sense. The issue must be the virgin connection / hub.

I do not have a clue about networks, ports, dchp, dns, sun net, Mac filtering. I admit that.

so what does someone do when they do not know about something, ask someone in that field for advice and assistance to diagnose and solve the problem.

Everyone I speak to whether that be virgin, apple, hp, curry’s Knowhow support, IT hardware specialist. It’s not them.

Rightly or wrong to try and get clarity on the issues, I turn to google, apple community forum and virgin community to try and answer questions.

so….. back to my original questions, everything I read about open ports etc is not good. Why are they open? Only on the v6 hub IP address.

Don’t have a clue what bonjour services are. But the question was commented on my someone. Thanks. I have an iPhone connected to the hub. Would this cause the v6 box to have these apple related ‘bonjour services’

why does my v6 box restart sometimes when my phone is connected to WiFi and someone calls

should there be an ability to login to the v6 box through its IP address?

Why when I trace route the virgin up’s they show locations to all sorts of places globally and isp’s such as Liberty global, Verizon, at and t,

I hope you can appreciate my concerns and issues I have been through. I don’t wish to blame anyone i just need it sorted for the sake of my business and sanity.

thanks
