Can't get 5.1 surround to work via Samsung TV and Sonos Playbar

Hi all,

I'm having an odd issue where I cannot get 5.1 surround to work from the V6 box, it always seems to come through to the Sonos Playbar as Stereo.

I have the V6 box connected to a Samsung Smart TV via HDMI, and the Samsung TV is connected via optical to the Sonos Playbar.

If I use the Netflix app on the Smart TV, 5.1 works perfectly to the Sonos Playbar, so I know the TV is capable of passing 5.1 correctly to the Sonos, however, I cannot for the life of me get it working from my Virgin Media V6 box.

I have the V6 set to Dolby Digital Sound, as is the Samsung TV.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

A lot of tvs will not pass 5.1 back out unless it is from its own internal source.

You should be able to connect the optical from the V6 to soundbar to prove this.

The TV model number would help.

The V6 does have digital audio output (labelled "D. AUDIO"), so run a TOSLINK cable from it to the Sonos and you'll have 5.1 audio.

Hmm, ok that's slightly annoying as the Sonos only has one optical in.

Sounds like I'll need to buy some kind of switching device so I can have multiple audio outputs into one input for the Sonos.

Thanks for your answers!

There's a number of switches available, can't recommend one but something like this is what you need:

Re: Can't get 5.1 surround to work via Samsung TV and Sonos Playbar

This probably won't help you much BUT you should check that your tv isn't converting the 5.1 signal received via HDMI from the V6 to stereo (2.0) which is then being put through the Optical out. Just check the audio settings on the tv... some TVs will allow you to have different settings for each input.

I have an LG and it passes through whatever audio signal it receives to the optical at the highest possible format. Unfortunately, optical can only pass through 5.1 at best. I have my Apple TV connected to the tv on a separate HDMI input as my amp unfortunately doesn't pass through Dolby Vision signals but the audio from the TV via the optical output comes back into the amp as 5.1.

My current Panasonic will passthru 5.1 via HDMI or optical  -  but my old Samsung had a clear note in the manual that it would only passthru audio at 2.0 but itself would output 5.1.

Re: Can't get 5.1 surround to work via Samsung TV and Sonos Playbar

As Sonos has only digital audio input it must rely on the TV being able to pass through audio - but TVs are designed primarily to display video with audio being of secondary importance. Unless audio can be processed by the TV's tuner, 5.1 will be converted to stereo. Furthermore, HD audio is carried only on HDMI and never on optical cable. And if one day the V6 (or son of V6) was able to output multichannel PCM, you'll still need HDMI as optical cable can't cope. If you want guaranteed surround sound you need an AV receiver.

Re: Can't get 5.1 surround to work via Samsung TV and Sonos Playbar

Hi there,

Yes, I bought a little TOSlink switcher in the end (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B074FWQPDL/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and it works great.

I'm a bit surprised at how little is actually broadcast in 5.1 though!
