WHY DOES VIRGIN STAND OUT AND CHARGE 40 PENCE FOR AN EMOJI ON TEXTING?

Hello Virgin,

Why on earth are Virgin (to my knowledge) the only ones that charge Virgin Mobile customers 40 pence for an emoji.

Emojis are seemingly available everywhere on phones these days, and a simple smiley face, a frown all of it are treated as a picture message by Virgin (AND NO ONE ELSE!!!!!!!).

There are no clear signs that say a text is converted to a picture message and you will be charged 40 pence each time.

IT IS A DISGRACEFUL WAY TO TREAT CUSTOMERS.

Any sensible responses from Virgin please.

Re: WHY DOES VIRGIN STAND OUT AND CHARGE 40 PENCE FOR AN EMOJI ON TEXTING?

It's the phone that decides how the message is sent not Virgin. Samsung (Especially the Galaxy range) are notorious for this. Some other androids do as well.

A google search shows this happening on other networks

Re: WHY DOES VIRGIN STAND OUT AND CHARGE 40 PENCE FOR AN EMOJI ON TEXTING?

How about a sensible response NOT from Virgin?

GIYF.

If your handset changes SMS smilies to MMS when its sent, you will be charged (by any carrier) for a MMS

Samsung and Apple devices have seperate issues around sending things to other manufacturers handsets that can cause the same thing.

Either way, its nowt to do with VM.

Re: WHY DOES VIRGIN STAND OUT AND CHARGE 40 PENCE FOR AN EMOJI ON TEXTING?

Thanks for the 2 replies.

I will check the phone settings when I get a chance.  if it is a setting thing and not VM, then I offer a full apology.  When I have contacted them when it first happened, I was told it was a charge they levy.

i'll post after I have checked the settings.

thanks.

Hi Minpar,

Thank you for your post.

I'm sorry that you've been having issues with SMS messages sending as MMS. I can see that our community have given you some great answers and it is usually down to the handset itself converting long messages or Emoji's to MMS messages. If you're still having issues after looking into your settings then please let us know

Thanks

Re: WHY DOES VIRGIN STAND OUT AND CHARGE 40 PENCE FOR AN EMOJI ON TEXTING?

Hi Emma_C

Thanks also for your reply.  As I said before, I had a conversation with VM when I first found out that emojis are charged, but wasn't made aware that it could be the phone or a setting issue.  It is too easy to type out an emoji these days, before you know it, another 40 pence each time :(.

I have had a chance to look at the phone settings, and unfortunately cannot see how or what this would look like.

The phone is a Galaxy A3 2016 version.  If anyone can help, I would be grateful.

Thanks.

You can try this.

Messages > 3dots > Settings > Text Messages > Input mode > select Unicode instead of Automatic

HI Emma,

Made the change, thanks.  can't see if that has made the difference until I see it on the account.  Send a  text with an emoji to check.

Thanks again, and It looks like I need to eat some pie, and apologise to VM.

HI,

Defo eating humble pie, seems to have worked by changing the setting Emma recommended.

Apologies to VM for my rant.

No apology necessary. thats what these forums are for, helping with some more obscure issues.

But thanks for taking the time to update us, glad its sorted.
