Texting unreliable

On a regular basis texts sent or received by myself and my daughter (both on VM mobile) either don't get delivered at all or are delivered a day or more after sending! My wife is on Tesco mobile and has just received a message from my daughter sent yesterday. Why is it so unreliable?

When did the issues start?

Do you have any signal issues at all? Do you have signal, when the messages are being sent?

Do the issues happen in any particular location or various?

Have either or both of you been sent any new sim cards recently?

Hi, 

I've not noticed any specific pattern when it fails, although often the delayed messages seem to arrive once a WiFi connection becomes available. No the sim cards we are using have been unchanged for several years.
