I have a virgin handset that I want to put an o2 SIM card in, will it work? Or do I need to do anything first?

Depends on how old the Virgin phone is. But if it is working with a Virgin SIM O2 should be fine.

It depends on the handset, if the O2 sim card is the same size as the SIM you were using previously it should be fine.
