ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR from reddit.com with virginmobile data. Fine with home WiFi

Not sure when it started, but I just noticed today that attempting to visit anything under the reddit.com domain results in an ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR.

This only occurs when using mobile data. When using my home WiFi (not provided by Virgin) there is no issue.

Chrome & Firefox exhibit the same error, as does the Reddit app.

I don't know if there are other website domains that fail similarly.

This is using a Huawei P30 lite.

APN settings are correct.

Any ideas?

Hi tehjumpingjawa, thanks for getting in touch.

Sorry to hear you've been getting an error when trying to access Reddit via mobile data. I don't have a VM mobile to hand to try and replicate this, so I'd like to confirm some details so we can take a closer look into it - please get back to me via PM (the purple envelope icon) and we'll take it from there.

For others' reference here's some additional information:

When my Virgin SIM is used in either my Huawei P30 Lite, or a relative's Xiaomi Note 9, the issue is present.

Swapping to an O2 SIM, and the issue goes away on both devices.

Issue is only present when using mobile data, not when using my home WiFi network. (My home broadband at this address is not provided by Virgin)

Known impacted domains:

  1. https://www.reddit.com/
  2. https://www.national-lottery.co.uk/

A similar issue (but impacting Virgin broadband) was reported here:

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/QuickStart-set-up-and/Cannot-access-national-lottery-reddit-and...

Thanks for the update @tehjumpingjawa, have you been able to insert the new SIM card we've been able to issue you?

Kindest regards,

David_Bn

No, the new SIM has yet to arrive.

Sorry to hear it's not yet arrived, do please insert the new SIM once it arrives and test all effected websites/app/services to see if this has helped resolve the issue

Kindest regards,

David_Bn

Here's the DNS lookups that my Virgin mobile connection are returning for the domains reddit.com, and national-lottery.co.uk:

reddit.comnational-lottery.co.uk

Note that both reddit.com & national-lottery.co.uk are resolving to the same address, 81.99.162.48; an address I believe to be owned by Virgin Media?

Here's what they should resolve to: (lookups performed when connected over my home WiFi network)
