Dunno if you've tried resetting the network settings? Downside is that you lose WiFi passwords.
If you are still not working after that I suspect something stuck vm's side that'll need fixing by them.
Obviously you'd prefer a quick solution so it's working now and in the future. You can wait for mods to reply on this thread, or post to virginmedia on Facebook or twitter. They cover all 4 services there. Most likely a quick response there so you get onto their radar so to speak. I know roaming works fine in tenerife as I've used it there more than once.
Many thanks for the info about successful roaming in Tenerife. I’ve been reluctant to reset the network but It’s the only thing I haven’t tried - loss of wifi passwords should be little more than inconvenient so I will try that & report back.

I’ve dpent many hours trawling the internet and the Virgin forum looking for a solution. It would seem that users with roaming abroad problems need intervention from the VM side so I would recommend if you are having similar issues open your own thread here and hopefully Rich or a colleague will work their magic.
