Bill and contract problems

At the end of my tether and would be grateful for help. I started a contract at the beginning of July and cancelled it within four hours. I managed to eventually speak to Virgin and was told it was all cancelled off with nothing to pay. However they continue to take money from my account and have now posted a letter saying I am in arrears. I have spent in excess of 12 hours hanging on the phone trying to get through to Virgin (and listening to ghastly music). The service is rubbish which is why I cancelled the contract. Please can someone help.
