Ah yes - the old lose the box and hours of saved programmes you will never get to see. Been there, done that (twice).

Much better option is to lose the flaky TiVo box - and Virgin Media while you are at it - and get a cheap PVR and subscription to Sky.

A subscription to Sky will come with a recording box in the same way that a Virgin Media one will.

Freeview can certainly be used with an "off-the-shelf" PVR but won't give access to any of the pay-channels that VM or Sky can. Different setups work for different people, depending on individual circumstances.
