Re: Sharing a single Phone and FAX line

if it was VOIP then your phoneline would be connected via the HUB, and not a standard phone socket.
if you get a dialtone from the old style phone socket then it's not VOIP.

you also said that a previous fax worked fine, so that would suggest the issue is with your epson and not the phoneline?

Re: Sharing a single Phone and FAX line

The previous fax setup with a Brother printer wasn't tested for about two years. I assumed it was working but maybe it wasn't.

There's no dialling tone on my phone - but it does make calls.

Re: Sharing a single Phone and FAX line

no dial tone sounds like a problem, even though you can make calls.
so just to clarify, this is an old style viring phone socket (similar to a BT socket), that is fed from a separate cable (and not just an extension from the hub).

have you checked there aren't any loose wiries at the socket?

Re: Sharing a single Phone and FAX line

Sorry for brief delay. Yes, I can confirm this is an old style Virgin wall socket (like BT), fed from a separate dedicated cable and not through the hub.

Re: Sharing a single Phone and FAX line

well if you have no dial tone then clearly there is an issue.
check it with a different phone, otherwise report a line fault.

Re: Sharing a single Phone and FAX line

Just had Virgin engineer here. Nothing wrong with line despite lack of dialling tone. The problem is ADSL to PSTN - phone line is the former, FAX is the latter. Ideally, the FAX would have this as a choice in settings, but the only choice is between PSTN and PBX so I will need some kind of filter. I might reply again if I can get hold of the correct filter and attach a photo, just in case anyone else has the same problem.

Re: Sharing a single Phone and FAX line

i'd say a lack of dialling tone is a fault, but hey ho.
