Every two hours I get a prompt on the TV asking me to update software but when I press OK nothing happens
I assume the TV is connected to the internet, either by Ethernet or WiFi?

This most likely refers to the software on the TV rather than your Virgin TV box.
Is the TV connected to an outdoor aerial or to a broadband connection (if a smart TV) ?
