Website block only partially working

I am trying to stop my son from accessing YouTube.  I have added the website to the list of blocked sites via My Apps and whilst I now cannot access it on my phone when connected to WiFi I can still access the site on my son's laptop which is defeating the object.

i have rebooted both the router and the laptop.

Re: Website block only partially working

I have also just run a DNS leak test as per another thread and the laptop is definitely connected properly.

Re: Website block only partially working

I dont get how you have blocked it?

Can you explain more fully? If you've blocked in "my apps" on the phone, that wont affect the laptop but maybe Im reading your post wrong

Re: Website block only partially working

Hi so I mean via the website itself

myvirginmedia/my apps/websafe

in there you can turn parental controls on and off, and also specify websites you wish to have blocked by the router.

Re: Website block only partially working

Okay that will block the website, provided your kid hasn't changed anything on the laptop

However work around are fairly simple and the information on how to is out there.

Last I checked, it DID not block access through the app.

Re: Website block only partially working

Thank you.

So basically you’re saying that the site blocker doesn’t work is that right?

Re: Website block only partially working

It does what its supposed to do in so far as if you use default settings, it blocks the required websites.

But it has limitations.

Thats the diplomatic way of putting it.

Re: Website block only partially working

Just tried blocking the domain youtube.com with Child Safe and whilst its effect was immediate on a mobile device it took longer (+5 minutes) on other devices; this is likely due to local  DNS caching on the other devices. If the problem persists execute the following in a command shell:

nslookup youtube.com

and post the results here — there should be no need to redact the result but do so if appropriate. Example output:

nslookup youtube.com
Server: 192.168.0.1 Address: 192.168.0.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: youtube.com Address: 62.252.172.241

Yep that was the problem the time lag.  It’s blocked now.

Thats a huge relief.  Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my call for help.
