Found out my eldest child accessed ******. Had set up websafe / childsafe to block all porn sites. It's on in webapps but definitely NOT working on any device in my home. My main computer is a mac. I've looked at a few suggestions which mention DNS - no idea what that is!!
Web Safe is currently not working (again) and you will need to wait for a Forum Team member to pick this up; may take a few days though.
What is DNS…
DNS Domain name server, the system that automatically translates Internet addresses to the numeric machine addresses that computers use. [Source: Oxford English Dictionaries — a detailed explanation can be found on Wikipedia]
There are other DNS based filters like OpenDNS's Family Shield but take the time to understand how DNS works so you are aware of the privacy implication.
Most modern operating system have some form of child account that can help restrict activities to those deemed appropriate.
Web Safe is too dysfunctional to be useful at present; one second it is working then the next it is not. Use a multi-layered approach so that if DNS filtering fails your anti-malware software and/or operating system provides protection.
The first thing to do is to check whether your son's computer is using Virgin Media's DNS servers, as web safe uses DNS interception in order to work. Note this is not a novel idea, OpenDNS have been doing the same thing for years.
Have a read of this thread to see how to check which DNS servers are being used.
