Wi fi slow

My wifi seems pretty slow and I have ran a test and got a result which means nothing to me! (2.89mpbs)
Is this a poor speed?
I have rebooted my hub as everything kept buffering and someone suggested that I need to reboot in order for it to work or speed up

Re: Wi fi slow

Comparatively, what speeds do you get wired at the same time?

Using an Ethernet cable to connect between your computer and the router, instead of using WiFi.

You can get an ethernet cable cheaply at computer shops / maplin / etc, even the big supermarkets will have it ... just ask at the desk for a 5 metre network cable or whatever.  You may see it being referred to as 'category 5e' (unshielded cable, cheap), 'cat 6' (shielded cable, expensive), 'RJ45' (the name of the plug & socket), patch cable, ethernet cable, or simply 'network cable'.  Connecting using a cable is much more reliable than using wifi.

WiFi is subject to local interference (which is your responsibility rather than Virgin's), so what people want to know is whether the problem is at your side, or if the problem is caused by Virgin.

Re: Wi fi slow

Not sure what happened with my earlier reply, perhaps I accidentally deleted it when trying to edit it?

But in any case...

WiFi is unreliable and subject to local inteference (which is nothing to do with Virgin).  So what is suggesting is that you use a network cable between your router and your computer, instead of using wifi.  This will identify whether the problem is at your side, or if it is a problem with Virgin.  All my home stuff (apart from my mobile!) is connected via cable, since it is more reliable and does not suffer from dropouts / interference / channel contention, etc.

You can buy a network cable from many places - (big supermarkets, electronics / computer shops), you just need to know the length of cable required.

It may be called ethernet cable, patch cable, network cable, category 5e or cat 6 cable, RJ45 cable, but it basically all just boils down to 'network cable' :-)

Re: Wi fi slow

Thank you for your reply.
I have 1 of those cables and will give it a go on my lap top
The issue appears to be when using my mobile phone or tablet as I don't really use the lap top these days, but I will give it a go
Thanks again
