Vivid 350 - Only getting fraction of expected speed

life was fine for the duration of our VIP contract with vivid 350. According to speedtest.net we were getting over 100mb on wifi devices and actually sometimes 360mbs on our cat5 pcs. Coincidence or not, after the one year contract ended (april) we stayed on the same package (despite the jump in cost) but we are getting about 50mbs on wifi devices (2m in front of hub3.0) and 60mbs on cat5 pcs. I don't find this acceptable.

Re: Vivid 350 - Only getting fraction of expected speed

To check the speeds are what they should be, wifi tests are useless.
You MUST do it this way. Make sure (in network settings) that your PC actually has a gigabit network card (not a 10/100 one or one “limited to that) and has the up to date drivers.
Cat5 cable is not guaranteed to go over 100mbps so use a new Cat6 ethernet cable to connect it directly to the Hub - which you have put into modem mode (to ensure only your device is connected). Check speeds like that at speedtest.net to a VM server first.
If they are still low try a different browser that you dont normally use. Then if still low - boot the PC into safe + networking mode (to disable any sofftware that is running on your PC that is (unbeknown to you) reducing your speed.
Post back what you get that way should get 350+ mbps - if so we can then try and sort the wifi.

--------------------
Services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & BT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired 2 WiFi,) SH2 in modem mode with Airport Extreme Router. On VIVID200, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

Re: Vivid 350 - Only getting fraction of expected speed

thanks for the advice. Didn't help though. As I said, we were running at 360MBS on two different computers a couple of months ago. No hardware or cable changes and now we are at about 60MBS. I just tried the safe network mode but got the same result. In different browsers. Been through all this with the virgin technical chat support a few weeks ago.. There is clearly a problem with the bandwidth allocation, downstream capacity or the hub.

Re: Vivid 350 - Only getting fraction of expected speed

FYI - I put a netgear gigabit switch between the hub and two PCs. Copy of a file between the PCs was averaging 113MB/s (yes, big-B: mega BYTES per second) - 8GB file transferred in just over 1 minute.

Separately, here are some hub figures:

Re: Vivid 350 - Only getting fraction of expected speed

@nikkiturrell A lot of Post RS errors on downstream channels 2, 3, 4 and 5 which is not healthy.  Please could you also post the upstream power figures and the network log?

No need to use my full title, Scott is fine Smiley Wink

Network log is on the 5th tab of the Router Status screen, two tabs to the right of where you got the Upstream figures.

EDIT - I see you found it while I was typing.

Re: Vivid 350 - Only getting fraction of expected speed

The upstream power levels look OK, but 16qam isn't ideal.  The RCS partial service errors in the log combined with the high Post RS errors are almost certainly the cause of your slow speeds.

This will need a technician to visit you to investigate and sort these issues.  You can call VM and try to book a visit or wait for the VM staff to get to this thread and they can help you book a visit.

Re: Vivid 350 - Only getting fraction of expected speed

Hi Nikkieturrell,

Welcome to our community forums!

Sorry you're having problems with your speeds. I would love to arrange a tech visit for you, in order to do this I will need some details and have sent you a PM. Please look out for the purple envelope and reply when you can 🙂

Many thanks,
