Upgraded to 1GIG & Concerned

Hey there,

I upgraded to 1GIG setup the new hub 4, put it into modem mode as I have a Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC300, more then good enough for 1GIG internet.

On testing it seems like I can only achieve 650MB internet? I have tried this on Modem and Router mode.

Can anyone clarify or does it take time for the speed to pick up? As it's only been activated today.

Ah that's good to know then. Still not able to get the speed above 620MB.

When I try just using a lan cable it is not working the internet doesn't seem to come through to my MAC. I have the ethernet plugged into port 1 on the hub, where my ASUS router was plugged in.

Post (as text) the hub's status data for Downstream.  At 620 Mbps I wonder if the hub is having problems with the single DOCSIS 3.1 channel,  Post the data when the hub's been running for a good few hours after a restart.

I had exactly the same with my pfsense router.

What did it for me was changing the MTU on the WAN interface to 1470 my speeds are now solidly in the 900+ range.

You changed this on your router and not the hub? I can check it out later today when I am back in.

Regards, Karl

I will do this later today it should have been running for a solid 8 hours by the time I get back. Thanks for your response.

Regards, Karl

Yes I changed the MTU on the pfsense Virgin Media interface, the hub is in bridge mode so nothing to change.

I had had the 500Mb business service for well over a year too and though I often got the 500Mb, the speed was often fluctuating too. I know now that changing the MTU would probably have fixed that.

Also, mss clamping if that is available to the same value.

Tried the MTU at 1470 no difference, it was set to 1500 prior.

I'm not sure how accurate fast.com is but it's currently overestimating my connection speed by around 300Mbps:

Blueyonderer_1-1645654147801.png

I normally use the Ookla Speedtest Windows desktop app, which seems to be consistent (A MacOS version is also available).

Also, I had similar problems with a previous Asus router and it was cured by enabling Hardware Acceleration (it may have been NAT Acceleration - it was under the switch control section, iirc. I would have been running Merlin firmware on it at the time, though, so your interface may be slightly different).

Edit: Scratch that last paragraph - I read Netgear and thought Asus... more coffee required!

Cheers.

@khudson2022 Regarding posted hub status data, that's all good in terms of power and noise, and shows the DOCSIS 3.1 channel is present and apparently working.  Unfortunately there's a bug in the firmware which means the hub doesn't report downstream errors properly on the D 3.0 channels, so we can't tell if there's a noise ingress problem on those channels, which would be a possible cause.
