Slow speed since 1st connection

Hi,

After months of accepting a ridiculously slow speed in comoarison to the "Ultimate Oomph" speeds I am paying a fortune for, I have had enough, as theoretically I should be getting 629Mbps but I am lucky even to get into 3 figures download and hve been told that upload speeds are not part of the promoted speeds, unlike my previous ISP, Gigaclear who after years of waiting did actually come up with the quoted 300Mbps for both download and upload! See below for a summary graph of speedtests I have been taking recently (since 2nd November) which are representative of what I've experienced all along.

Keefyv_0-1638997971047.png

I have tried talking to VM, with no positive outcome apart from the arrival of a booster pod (I think) but that has predictably made no difference. I started with my Linksys mesh system I used at my previous Gigaclear supplied home, and have tried with it on its own, combined with the VM router and currently VM alone and none of these permutations help a jot.

Having seen many other posts along similar lines, I am attaching below the router status stats and hope someone can help me improve (massively) on this, as I feel a right mug paying as much as I do, when the VM 360 Box is pretty unreliable too, and it just winds me up when VM wax on about their 1Gb service - maybe I'll get to 100Mb more often with that!

Old Cat5 cables are only specced for a maximum of ~100Mbps.. Some have reported getting more but there is no guarantee - for that you have to use a minimum of Cat5e - Cat6a provides better shielding from cross-talk and interference.

Its cheap so just get a 5/10/20 Meter run and use it for the tests I suggested

Old laptops often have 10/100 NIC cards and wifi cards - so again may max out at ~100. Check the detailed spec.

I have just signed up for a BQM with ThinkBroadband so no stats to provide yet but I hope I will do soon.

I do hope someone can understand these stats and suggest something because I ran out of ideas months ago and have only glumly accepted the sitation because most things work ok, but with a VM cabinet outside next door and people further up the road being delighted with their speeds I am feeling decidedly peeved to say the least!

Thanks in anticipation

Can you run speed tests this way and see how they are....
_______________________________________________

If you think that you have a BB speed problem, then to check the speeds coming in to your Hub properly, and whether they match what you should be getting, you cannot rely on wifi tests, - no BB supplier guarantees those - only speeds "TO" the Hub are guaranteed.

So, can you test speeds directly like this. As you expect >100Mbps then connect a 1GB enabled computer/laptop, with up to date drivers, via a NEW and working Cat5e/6a ethernet cable, directly to the Hub which you have put into “modem mode” (https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-hub-modem-mode ). This ensures that NO other devices are connected

Test speeds at https://speedtest.samknows.com/ - try on 2 different browsers.

If they are still low – boot your device into Windows safe+networking mode - to disable any potentially interfering software - and try again.

There are many posts on here (I have a list of ~30!) where QoS software, unknown/flaky software, old network card drivers, corrupted browsers, bad cables or other connected devices are limiting speeds on tests.

Report back what that gets.

Thanks John, I think you may have hit on our issues already as we have OK but not up to the minute laptops and rely completely on wifi to connect everything including relatively recent Samsung mobiles and an old iPad 2 too, so I have standard ethernet cables which may show much better connection speeds even without being Cat5e/6a but for us this is impractical. My neighbour however also relies on wifi I think but there could be some wired connections there too, so I'll check that before wasting more of your time.

BTW, I have tried SamKnows recently but it couldn't find my router if I recall correctly?

Cheers

Keith

Sorry about the format of that 3rd part - it wouldn't display as a table but you may already have got the gist anyway...
