Slow WIFI and Hub 4 and Dell

Hi everyone

Ive recently switched to Virgin broadband 350 and I am having a problem with my work laptop.

It is a Dell Vostro 3150.

My iphone seems to be getting circa 300mbps in my study ( Virgin connect app), but my laptop is lucky to get 50mbps.

I am currently posting this from my work office, where i am getting 300mbps - so i am assuming it is something going on with my laptop and Virgin.

Ive looked for solutions online but cant seem to find a solution - does anybody have any ideas?

thanks

Ralphy

Sounds like your laptop is connecting to the 2.4ghz band.  Disable the 2.4ghz band as a temporary test and see if you can connect to the 5ghz band.

Hi Adduxi

thanks for the response.

Ive changed the wireless adaptor to prefer 5ghz, but the issue still arises.

Again my iphone next to it - seems to cope with the connection fine.

My partner is an 02 customer and im told we can get wifi pods to boost signal - does anybody know how we order these?

Thanks

Update:

Took the laptop in the lounge where the Hub 4 is about 6ft away- still only getting 173mbps half of what i should be getting.

Opened up the router and matched the MAC address to the laptop - could see the connection over 5ghz being 585MBps.

What could be throttling the speed? Ive updated all the drivers on my wireless card etc - and nothing is working.

Clear the browser cache or try the speedtest.net App instead. Also try with ethernet cable & https://www.samknows.com/realspeed/

Thanks Pete - It says router kicking out correct speed but you can see laptop getting 13mbps 😞

Hi @Ralphy101,

Thank you for your posts and welcome to our community forums. We're here to help.

I'm really sorry to hear you seem to be facing some connection speed issues with your laptop. Are any other devices impacted at all? Is the laptop having any issues with speeds via a wired connection?

Thanks,

Over the past year or two I have collected a few threads where speed issues on Dells has been reported. See these and see if there is anything relevant to you - particularly they tend to "auto-run" SmartByte that is a QoS app that limits speeds if not disabled

EDIT - just spotted that some of these have been "archived".  But check SmartByte is not running

Hi Zac

My sons Xbox series x is getting circa 180mbps - my iphone gets 300+

My wife is has an o2 contract and we were under the impression that our speed would increase - along with us being able to obtain some wifi pods.

The study is in a converted garage - so its downstairs a room and hallway away from the router.

Would you happen to know how we obtain the wifi pods? I've resigned myself to accepting i wont get full speed on my laptop - but a booster or 2 in the kitchen may help with what is available to the laptop?

Thanks

Hi John - ive searched for smartbye etc and it doesnt appear to be on my machine. Im still very much stumped!
