Slow Office VPN for a week

Hi folks,

I've been working from home using VM for the past 2months(ish) now and over the last week, the VPN connectivity into my office has been incredibly slow. We've made no changes on the office network, and other people have no issues. I've tried using my phone hotspot and all works fine so I know it's not my laptop.

I normally connect via PowerLine adapter (worked previously) but tried using WiFi and direct cabling and still get the same issue into the office. Going to set up some monitoring from the office side to just rule out any issues within there, but I noticed some issues in my routers log and wondered if they're anything to be concerned about? (MAC addresses ommited).

Additionally, we've noticed sometimes streaming services can occsaionally drop out (more than experienced in the past). Downloading files and speed tests seems to yield very good results though

Re: Slow Office VPN for a week

Hello

You have a lot of noise on your downstream as shown by the high amount of Post RS Error, this can normally be resolved  by going around and make sure all coaxial connections to all VM are finger tight, the best way to do this to undo the connector and  then re-tighten them, once that is done turn off the hub for 30 secs and then back on, then check your post RS error again if these are increasing at a large rate, then you will need and engineer to resolve.

Re: Slow Office VPN for a week

Thanks, Mike.

I'll give this a try shortly and see what happens.
What's a good range I should be looking to see for this?

Re: Slow Office VPN for a week

Hello

Good question post RS errors should be always as low as possible, post RS errors are errros that  cannot be corrected by the hub. if I look at mine sometimes I get 1/2 a week, it should  never be as high as you have unless the hub has been on for a extend period of time. Normally if the Post RS errors are far greater than the pre ones then that is where the issue is.

Re: Slow Office VPN for a week

It's been nearly 24hours since I disconnected the coax from the router and the wall socket.
The'yre not screws though, they're push fittings so couldn't tighten them.

I've not got any Post RS errors since doing this and connectivity is still pretty bad over VPN. I noticed some recommendations to set up a broadband quality monitor. Packet loss is very low, max latency spikes a few times though which I guess are okay. Not sure how this compares to a "Normal" connection though?

Re: Slow Office VPN for a week

What are normal speeds and connectivity like?

If they're fine then the issue is with the VPN connectivity.

Re: Slow Office VPN for a week

Speed tests using both Google and Ookla give really good results. I'm on M100 and get 107Mbps down / 10Mbps up.

Web browsing is mostly okay, although sometimes the pages can take a few seconds longer than I expect to load, particularly images.
Watching YouTube can be fine, then all of a sudden, the video will just stop as it has stopped buffering. Turning WiFi off, the video immediately starts working again.
Gaming I'm experiencing lag spikes a few times per game session and sometimes audio cuts out on other people. (I always put that down to their mic).
These are all just what i'd class as livable inconveniences though. Is it worse than normal? Maybe. I don't have any data that backs it up, it's just my perceived experience based on how it was before and when using other providers.

Under normal circumstances, yes I would say the issue is with the VPN, however, no one else has an issue, and additionally, I've connected using my phone as a hotspot and the VPN works flawlessly. It's only when connected over my virgin media connection that I have a problem.

As a side note, what I'm doing over VPN that is slow is:
1) File transfer from the office Network drives
2) Client Application connecting to a Server on a remote customer site (accessible via our office VPN). When this starts, it has to download a good chunk of data which is taking around 30mins at present. Usually 3minutes.

I'll continue to keep an eye on the Post RS Errors though.
