Recent install speed

Hi Guys,

I had my wifi installed yesterday, the installer was fantastic and got everything up and running and had to adjust the speed in the cabinet at the end of the road.

I was ecstatic as being on sky I had only been getting around 48mbps. When I tested it whilst the engineer was on site I was getting over 500mbps which I was amazed with. I have then gone back today and tested it and only getting around 120mbps.
Which admittedly is a hell of a lot better than sky. But I am paying for 350+ mbps.

That is right next to the router plugged in exactly the same as the installer left it.

What would be the reason for there being 350mbps difference. Bit of a shame really on 2nd day of using the service.

You cannot rely on wifi speed tests they are notoriously variable, - only speeds "TO" the Hub are usually guaranteed.

So, can you test speeds directly like this. If you expect >100Mbps then Connect a 1GB enabled computer/laptop, with up to date drivers, via a NEW and working Cat5e/6a ethernet cable, directly to the Hub which you have put into “modem mode” (https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-hub-modem-mode ). This ensures that NO other devices are connected

Test speeds at https://speedtest.samknows.com/ - or https://www.speedtest.net/ - try on 2 different browsers - as Chrome sometimes gives odd results.

If they are still low – boot your device into Windows safe+networking mode - to disable any potentially interfering software - and try again.

There are many posts on here (I have a list of ~30!) where QoS software, anti-virus, unknown/flaky software, old network card drivers, corrupted browsers, bad cables or other connected devices are limiting speeds on tests.

Report back what that gets. For examples of why... see message 7 in the first thread and 9 in in the second and 3 in the third

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & BT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 2 on WiFi) Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's. On Volt 350Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

Hello jstainsby

Thanks for posting in regards to your recent installation and wireless network speeds, we appreciate the confusion this can cause and you raising this via the Forums. Welcome to the community.

As Jbrennand has advised, wireless speeds may be considerably lower than a wired connection due to the many factors that can impact the speeds over a wireless network. This can range from the device to distance to other appliances in the property.

We have these tips available to help with broadband issues:

When running a speed test we would always recommend running this via a wired connection This can be completed using an ethernet cable via a PC or laptop and will allow us to see the speeds available at the Hub.

We do have the Connect App https://virg.in/connectapp that will allow you to scan your property to optimise the wireless network and if needed order pod's. Depending on your package these may be free but any package is eligible for these if needed.

You can also give the team a call on 150 from a Virgin Media landline or 0345 454 1111 option 1 then option 2 this will get you through to the Broadband technical team who will be able to look into this further for you.
